Jeffrey Earl Marsh was born on July 7, 1977, in York, Pennsylvania, and grew up on a farm. Marsh attended Spring Grove Area High School, graduating in 1995, and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1999. Early in their career, Marsh was a cabaret performance artist in Philadelphia, with their show, ‘An Evening with Jeffrey Marsh,’ being a founding performance of the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Theater Festival. After moving to New York City in 2005, they became involved in the downtown cabaret scene, appearing at venues like Joe’s Pub and Don’t Tell Mama. In 2010, Marsh starred in ‘Julian’ at Dixon Place and was commissioned by the Museum of Art and Design in 2012 to create a performance art piece honoring Richard Simmons.
Marsh gained significant public attention through social media, becoming known for viral videos on Vine, Instagram, and TikTok, which often feature affirming and empowering statements. Their most popular Vine accumulated over 26 million loops. Marsh is recognized for their role as an ‘anti-bully’ by Mashable and for changing perceptions of LGBTQ individuals through social media, as noted by The Huffington Post. In 2016, they made history as the first openly non-binary person to speak on national television during an interview with Newsmax. Marsh is also a bestselling author, with ‘How to Be You’ released in 2016 by Penguin Random House, which topped Oprah’s Gratitude Meter and was named an Excellent Book of the Year by TED-Ed. Their second book, ‘Take Your Own Advice,’ was released in May 2023.
Throughout their career, Jeffrey Marsh has collaborated with several organizations, serving as the official social media ambassador and red carpet correspondent for GLSEN, where they interviewed celebrities such as Zachary Quinto and J.J.
