About

James Edward Duggan Jr. was born on January 14, 1954, in Glens Falls, New York. He excelled as a multi-sport athlete in high school, earning a letter in football, track, wrestling, and basketball, and winning the New York State High School wrestling championship. Duggan attended Southern Methodist University, where he played college football and earned a bachelor’s degree in applied plant biology. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL but knee injuries ended his football career. Duggan then transitioned into professional wrestling, making his debut in 1979.

His wrestling persona evolved through various names like “Big” Jim Duggan, “The Convict,” and “Wildman” Duggan before he adopted his iconic “Hacksaw” nickname in Southwest Championship Wrestling. In 1982, Duggan joined Mid-South Wrestling, initially as a heel with the Rat Pack faction. A pivotal moment in his career came when he turned into a fan favorite and began carrying a 2×4 to the ring, a practical tool suggested by mentor Bruiser Brody for self-protection against aggressive fans. This 2×4, along with his patriotic chants of “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” and signature “Hooooo!” call, became integral to his character. He won the Mid-South Tag Team Championship and North American Heavyweight Championship during this period.

Duggan joined WWF in 1987, quickly establishing his patriotic persona through feuds with characters like Nikolai Volkoff. In 1988, he achieved a significant milestone by winning the inaugural Royal Rumble match, eliminating One Man Gang. He continued to be a fan favorite, engaging in high-profile feuds with wrestlers such as André the Giant, Dino Bravo, and Randy Savage, even holding the title of “King of the WWF” briefly in 1989. His career continued in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1994, where he notably defeated Steve Austin to win the United States Heavyweight Championship on his first night. Duggan later won the WCW World Television Championship. In 1998, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer but returned to wrestling after successful treatment. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011, recognizing his impact and longevity in the sport, which spans more than four decades.
