John Becker is a respected American college basketball coach who has been serving as the head coach of the Vermont Catamounts of the America East Conference since 2011. Under Becker’s confident leadership, Vermont has enjoyed considerable success in recent years, with Becker becoming the winningest coach in Vermont history in January 2023, with a 74-64 win over Bryant! With seven consecutive 20-win seasons and several postseason berths, Becker has been instrumental in Vermont’s success in college basketball. His achievements have rightly earned him several accolades, including the America East Coach of the Year Award in 2017, as well as being a finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year award.
Becker commenced his coaching career in 1994 when he became an assistant coach at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. A few years later, he was elevated to the position of head coach in 1997, where he served until 1999. He joined the Vermont staff as director of basketball operations in 2006-07 and served in the role for two seasons before being promoted to assistant coach. Since then, Becker has led the Catamounts to several postseason berths, including three NCAA Tournament appearances. Becker had a hugely successful start to his head coaching career at Vermont, leading the Catamounts to a second-place finish in the America East Conference in his first year, winning the America East Championship for Vermont’s fifth NCAA Tournament bid in nine years.
A charming and charismatic coach with natural leadership skills and an astute understanding of the game, Becker will undoubtedly continue to lend his ample basketball knowledge to the next generation of talent.
