John Mark Galecki was born in Bree, Belgium, on April 30, 1975, to American parents. His father, Richard Galecki, served in the U.S. Air Force, while his mother, Mary Lou, worked as a mortgage consultant. The family, including siblings Allison and Nick, moved to Chicago, Illinois, when Galecki was three. He began his acting career at a young age, performing in local theater productions. By age 11, he was recognized in Chicago’s theater scene, earning a Joseph Jefferson Citation nomination for his role in “The Member of the Wedding.” His early on-screen career began with the CBS miniseries “Murder Ordained” in 1987. In 1989, he gained recognition for his role as Rusty Griswold in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” The family relocated to Los Angeles to support his burgeoning career, though they later returned to Chicago, with Galecki staying in L.A. at 14 years old to pursue his acting.
Galecki’s career progressed with a significant role as David Healy on the hit ABC sitcom “Roseanne,” starting as a recurring character in 1992 and eventually becoming a main cast member until 1997. Following “Roseanne,” he appeared in various films such as “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997), “Suicide Kings” (1997), and “Vanilla Sky” (2001). His return to television came in 2007 with the lead role of Leonard Hofstadter in “The Big Bang Theory.” This role brought him widespread critical and commercial success, including a Satellite Award win in 2012 and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2011. The show ran until 2019, during which time he became one of the highest-paid actors in television.
Beyond his acting roles, Galecki has also been involved in producing, with executive producer credits on television series such as “Living Biblically” (2018) and “SciJinks” (2018). He has maintained a private personal life, often expressing a preference for privacy over public broadcasting of personal matters. In 2006, he returned to the stage in Douglas Carter Beane’s play “The Little Dog Laughed,” earning a 2007 Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. He continues to engage in diverse projects and recently reunited with former co-stars for “The Conners,” reprising his role as David Healy.
