Jonathan Greenard was born on May 25, 1997, in Hiram, Georgia. He attended Hiram High School where he participated in both basketball and football. During his senior year, he was recognized as the 5-A regional defensive player of the year, leading him to commit to playing college football at Louisville. Greenard began his collegiate career at Louisville, redshirting his first year. As a redshirt freshman, he contributed significantly as a reserve linebacker, recording 22 tackles, including seven for loss, and 2.5 sacks. He also made a notable play with a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown. He made his first collegiate start in the 2016 Citrus Bowl, where he recorded five tackles.
Greenard became a full-time starter for the Louisville Cardinals in his redshirt sophomore season, leading the team with 15.5 tackles for loss and tying for the team lead with seven sacks.
