Jonathan Greenard was born on May 25, 1997, in Hiram, Georgia. He attended Hiram High School where he participated in both basketball and football. During his senior year, he was recognized as the 5-A regional defensive player of the year, leading him to commit to playing college football at Louisville. Greenard began his collegiate career at Louisville, redshirting his first year. As a redshirt freshman, he contributed significantly as a reserve linebacker, recording 22 tackles, including seven for loss, and 2.5 sacks. He also made a notable play with a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown. He made his first collegiate start in the 2016 Citrus Bowl, where he recorded five tackles.
Greenard became a full-time starter for the Louisville Cardinals in his redshirt sophomore season, leading the team with 15.5 tackles for loss and tying for the team lead with seven sacks. His redshirt junior season was impacted by a wrist injury sustained early in the first game against Alabama, which caused him to miss the remainder of the season. Following this, he transferred to the University of Florida, enrolling in January 2019 as a graduate transfer after completing his degree early. In his first game as a Florida Gator, he earned Southeastern Conference Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week honors for his performance against Miami, tallying six tackles and 1.5 sacks. He concluded his season with the Gators with 52 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks, along with three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, four passes defended, and one interception, demonstrating his versatile defensive capabilities.

After several seasons with the Texans, including a standout 2023 season where he recorded a single-season career high of 12.5 sacks, Greenard moved to the Minnesota Vikings. On March 13, 2024, he signed a four-year, $76 million contract with the Vikings. In Week 3 of the 2024 season, he earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors after a three-sack performance against his former team, the Houston Texans.
