United Kingdom Jony Ive, a British-American designer, is best known for his influential work at Apple Inc., where he shaped iconic products. He now leads LoveFrom, a creative collective collaborating with global brands and venturing into AI hardware.
Sir Jony Ive said his new partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, would renew his optimism about technology. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman bought Jony Ive's startup io for $6.5 billion. As part of deal, LoveFrom will remain an independent company with Ive assuming creative and design responsibilities across all of OpenAI’s operations.
Ive joined Apple in September 1992, and was promoted to senior vice president of industrial design in the late 1990s after the return of co-founder Steve Jobs. He was Chief Design Officer from 2015 until his departure in July 2019. Working closely with Jobs, Ive played a vital role in the designs of products including the Apple Watch, iMac, Power Mac G4 Cube, iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook, and the user interface of Apple's mobile operating system iOS. He was also responsible for the design of major architectural projects including Apple Park and Apple Stores.

Jonathan Paul Ive was born on February 27, 1967, in Chingford, London, United Kingdom. His father was a silversmith, influencing Ive’s early exposure to design. He developed an interest in automotive design during his youth. Ive pursued industrial design at Newcastle Polytechnic, graduating with a first-class Bachelor of Arts in 1989. During his studies, some of his designs, including a telephone and a hearing aid, were showcased at the Design Museum in London. His academic work earned him RSA Student Design Awards in both 1988 and 1989, which funded a trip to the United States.
After a period at the product design agency Roberts Weaver Group and a London-based design firm named Tangerine, where he worked on projects for clients such as LG and Ideal Standard, Ive joined Apple Inc. in September 1992. His initial assignments included the second generation of the Newton and the MessagePad 110. A lack of design emphasis within Apple during the early 1990s nearly led to his departure, but the return of co-founder Steve Jobs in 1996 persuaded him to stay, with the promise of making history. In 1997, Ive was promoted to Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, leading the team responsible for Apple’s hardware products. His first significant project in this role was the iMac, introduced in 1998, which featured a translucent plastic case and became a commercial success. This marked the beginning of a long and impactful collaboration that would define Apple’s product aesthetic for decades.
Ive’s design philosophy, influenced by the Bauhaus tradition and designer Dieter Rams, emphasized simplicity and user experience. He played a crucial role in shaping products such as the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, MacBook, and the visual interface of iOS. Beyond products, Ive also oversaw major architectural projects like Apple Park and Apple Stores. In 2015, he became Chief Design Officer, a C-level executive position. In June 2019, Ive departed Apple to establish his independent design firm, LoveFrom. LoveFrom has since collaborated with prominent brands including Ferrari, Airbnb, and Moncler, and in 2025, formed a significant partnership with OpenAI, which acquired Ive’s AI device startup ‘io’ for $6.5 billion to develop next-generation AI-powered computers.
