Jorge Ivayr Rodrigues da Fonseca, born on October 30, 1992, in São Tomé and Príncipe, is a Portuguese judoka who has achieved significant international recognition. He represents both Portugal and Sporting Clube de Portugal in the under 100 kg weight category. Fonseca’s career is marked by his competitive spirit and his ability to overcome personal challenges, including a battle with cancer in 2015, which occurred a year before his first Olympic appearance.
Fonseca’s professional trajectory includes securing multiple prestigious titles. He stood out at the World Judo Championships, earning two gold medals. His Olympic career saw him compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, and he later achieved a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Additionally, he has accumulated a considerable number of medals in IJF Grand Slam and Grand Prix events, consistently placing at the top of his weight class.
His achievements also extend to European competitions, where he earned a silver medal at the 2019 European Games as part of a mixed team and a bronze at the 2020 European Judo Championships in Prague. Fonseca has demonstrated consistent performance in various international and national tournaments, contributing to his highest world ranking of 1st in 2021.
