The great sportsman Jorge Fonseca is a judoka, who competes in the -100kg weight category. He is a 2x World Champion, an IJF Grand Slam Champion, an IJF Grand Prix Champion, as well as a European Games Silver-medalist, a European Championships medalist, and an Olympic medalist.
Born and raised in the Portuguese island of São Tomé e Príncipe, Fonseca started judo at a young age, and began competing at cadet and junior level. At the age of 21 he became the European U23 Champion when he won Gold at the 2013 European U23 Championships in Samokov. The following year he took Bronze at the same event, as well as taking Bronze at his first IJF Grand Prix. Between 2015 and 2020, he not only represented Portugal at his first Olympics in Rio 2016, but he went on to win six IJF Grand Prix medals, five IJF Grand Slam medals, a European Championships Bronze, a European Games Silver in Mixed team, and a World Championships Gold.
Since 2021, Fonseca has continued to add to his medal tally. He represented Portugal again at his second Olympics, this time taking the Bronze at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and then he took his second World Championships Gold at Budapest. In 2022 he won his first IJF Grand Prix Gold, as well as his first IJF Grand Slam Gold and Silver medals.
