Exeter Chiefs have confirmed the signing of Springboks and Stormers hooker Joseph Dweba as their second acquisition ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Born on October 25, 1995, in Carletonville, South Africa, Joseph Dweba developed an early passion for rugby through touch-rugby with friends. His foundational years saw him represent significant youth teams, including the Golden Lions U16 in 2011 and the Golden Lions U18 team at the Craven Week competition two years later. His talent was further recognized with his inclusion in the South African Schools side, where he notably played against England, France, and Wales in August 2013. These early experiences set the stage for a professional career marked by progression and achievement across various competitive leagues.
Dweba continued to hone his skills moving to the Free State Cheetahs for the 2014 season. This period saw him contributing to the South Africa Under-20 squad, participating in the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand, and later in the 2015 World Rugby Under 20 Championship, where his team secured third place. After making his provincial first-class debut with the Free State XV in the 2015 Vodacom Cup, Dweba built a strong domestic presence before venturing internationally. His career includes significant stints with the Cheetahs in the Pro14 and the French Top14 side Bordeaux Bègles, demonstrating his adaptability and capacity to perform at an elite level globally.
His return to South Africa in 2022 to join the DHL Stormers in the United Rugby Championship reaffirmed his status as a key player in his home country’s rugby landscape. Dweba’s career reached an international pinnacle with his selection for the Springbok squad in June 2021, and he made his test debut against Argentina in August 2021. Looking ahead, Dweba is set to join the Exeter Chiefs in England for the 2025-26 season, marking another significant milestone in his career and showcasing his continued ambition and physical prowess in professional rugby.
