Juan Pablo Montoya is a Columbian-American racing driver who was won some of the world’s mostprestigious races around the globe during his glittering career.
He became the International F3000 champion in 1998 and went on to secure 7 Grand Prix wins and 30 podiums, including victory in the British Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Monaco, the Grand Prix of Long Beach and two wins in the Italian Grand Prix. In 2009 Times Online ranked Montoya 30th in their list of the Top 50 Formula One drivers of all time.
He is also one of only three drivers to win races in Indy cars, Formula One carsand NASCAR Cup cars.Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Montoya began karting at a young age and quickly advanced to the Columbian Formula Renault series in 1992. Five years later, Montoya’ skills came to the attention of Williams, and he was invited to test for the team in Spain.
Whilst performing Formula One testing duties for Williams he became the 1998 F3000 champion with nine podium finishes in twelve races.Montoya began to rise to prominence when Williams agreed a deal that would see him compete in the CART FedEx Championship in 1999. Montoya won the title in his rookie year and became the youngest ever CART FedEx champion at the age of 24. Montoya made his Formula One debut at the Australian Grand Prix in the BMW-powered Williams team.
In his first season he secured three pole positions, four podiums, and gained his first victory at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix.The following years saw Montoya continue with Williams before moving to McLaren, starting 95 races, winning 7 Grand Prix and reaching the podium on 30 occasions. Still racing today, Montoya now competes in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
