About

Juan Pablo Montoya Roldán was born on September 20, 1975, in Bogotá, Colombia. He began his kart racing career at the age of five, quickly progressing through junior categories in Colombia and Mexico. His early achievements include winning the 1984 Colombian Children’s National Karting Championship and later securing the 1993 Nationale Tournement Swift GTI Championship. In 1994, he competed in the American-based Barber Saab Pro Series, finishing third overall. Moving to Europe, Montoya raced in the Formula Vauxhall Lotus Championship in 1995, finishing third, and the British Formula 3 Championship in 1996. His notable success in junior racing culminated in winning the 1998 International Formula 3000 Championship with Super Nova Racing, a significant step before his entry into major international series.

Montoya transitioned to Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in 1999 with Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR), winning the series championship as a rookie, including victories at Long Beach, Nazareth, and Rio. His remarkable inaugural season also saw him win the prestigious Indianapolis 500 in 2000, becoming the first rookie to do so since 1966. This success propelled him to Formula One, where he joined Williams in 2001. During his six seasons in F1 with Williams and McLaren, Montoya secured seven Grand Prix victories, including his maiden win at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix, and achieved 30 podium finishes. He reached his highest F1 championship standing of third in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons. After his Formula One tenure, Montoya moved to NASCAR in late 2006, again with CGR. He won two Cup Series races: the 2007 Toyota/Save Mart 350 and the 2010 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. He qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup in 2009, finishing eighth in the points standings.

Following his NASCAR career, Montoya returned to the IndyCar Series with Team Penske in 2014. He achieved a second victory at the Indianapolis 500 in 2015, marking an impressive return to open-wheel racing. He also competed in the IMSA SportsCar Championship, winning the title in 2019 with Team Penske alongside Dane Cameron, and is a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona with CGR. His diverse career also includes three victories at the 6 Hours of Bogotá and winning the individual event of the Race of Champions in 2017. He continues to make occasional appearances in various racing events, including a return to NASCAR with 23XI Racing in 2024, demonstrating his enduring passion and talent for motorsport.
