Kameron Michaels

Dane Young, known professionally as Kameron Michaels, was born on July 23, 1986. He spent the majority of his youth in Columbia, Tennessee, after initial childhood years in Massillon, Ohio, and Michigan. Young realized he was gay in his early teens, coming out to his mother at 14, who reacted supportively. During high school, he faced bullying due to his sexuality and body language, which led him to develop introverted tendencies. He would study his own movements to modify gestures perceived as effeminate. At 18, Young began traveling to Nashville on weekends, working as a go-go dancer and cocktail server. It was in Nashville that he first encountered drag and subsequently began performing. He moved to Nashville at 21, finding a more accepting queer community compared to the conservative environment of Columbia.

Michaels initially performed under the drag name Arianna St. Claire before adopting Kameron Michaels. He chose Kameron for its androgynous sound and Michaels because it was a strong surname not yet used by other Nashville drag queens. His drag style is described as hyper-feminine, drawing inspiration from cinema and video games. The Southern drag scene in Nashville provided him with diverse skills, including dancing and costume creation. After developing a gym habit in his mid-20s, he became known as a “muscle queen.” Prior to his television appearance, Young worked full-time as a hair stylist, performing drag on weekends, primarily at Play Dance Bar in Nashville.

Michaels first auditioned for RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2014 for the seventh season but did not receive a callback. He auditioned for the tenth season to cope with a difficult breakup, emphasizing his unique “muscle queen” persona. He was selected and finished as a runner-up in 2018. Michaels became known as the season’s “lip sync assassin,” surviving four consecutive lip syncs, a show record at the time. He also won the first Lip Sync for the Crown in the finale, bringing his total lip sync performances to six. His introverted nature on the show generated discussion, leading him to identify with ambiversion. In August 2021, he appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars season six as a Lip Sync Assassin, winning against Ra’Jah O’Hara.
