Kellen Vincent Clemens was born on June 7, 1983, in Burns, Oregon. He developed his football skills playing for the Burns Hilanders, leading them to the Oregon state 3A championship game in 1999. In high school, Clemens achieved a state record of 8,646 passing yards and 102 touchdowns. He also earned USA Today All-American honors and was named Oregon Gatorade Player of the Year. Clemens continued his collegiate career at the University of Oregon, playing for the Oregon Ducks under head coach Mike Bellotti. He became the starting quarterback in 2003, setting records for touchdown passes and passing yards for a sophomore, surpassing Dan Fouts’ 1970 record. In 2004, he posted 437 passing yards in a victory against Washington State. His senior season in 2005 was cut short by an ankle injury, but he still recorded 2,406 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and a 152.87 passer efficiency rating. Clemens finished his college career with 7,555 passing yards, ranking third in school history at the time.
Clemens was selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft as the 49th overall pick. He debuted in 2006, seeing limited action primarily as a backup quarterback. His first NFL start came in Week 2 of the 2007 season after starting quarterback Chad Pennington sustained an injury. He played a significant role in the 2007 season, completing 130 passes for 1,529 yards and 5 touchdowns across 11 games, with 8 starts. In 2008 and 2009, he continued as a backup, notably stepping in when Mark Sanchez was injured during the 2009 season, earning a 26-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After his time with the Jets, Clemens signed with the Washington Redskins in 2011, then briefly with the Houston Texans before joining the St. Louis Rams the same year. With the Rams, he started three games in 2011, passing for 546 yards and two touchdowns. His most active period with the Rams occurred in 2013 when he started nine games, recording 1,673 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. In 2014, Clemens moved to the San Diego Chargers, where he served as a backup to Philip Rivers. He threw his first touchdown pass as a Charger in 2015 against the Minnesota Vikings. He remained with the Chargers, through their move to Los Angeles, until his final NFL season in 2017, concluding an 11-season professional football career with 4,053 passing yards and 16 touchdowns. After retiring from the NFL, Clemens transitioned to the business world, becoming a Partner and Head of Elateus Sports at Elateus.
