Klay Alexander Thompson was born on February 8, 1990, in Los Angeles, California. His mother, Julie, was a college volleyball player, and his father, Mychal Thompson, was the first overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft. When Thompson was two, his family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, where he was childhood friends and Little League teammates with future NBA star Kevin Love. The family later relocated to Ladera Ranch, California, where Thompson attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School. In his senior year, he averaged 21 points per game and led his team to a Division III State Championship appearance, setting a state finals record with seven three-pointers in a single game. He was named Division III State Player of the Year, League MVP, first-team Best in the West, and an EA Sports Second Team All-American.
Thompson played college basketball for three seasons at Washington State University, starting all 33 games as a freshman and leading the team in three-point and free-throw percentages. He was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. In his sophomore season, Thompson led the Cougars to the Great Alaska Shootout Championship, scoring a tournament-record 43 points, the third-highest single-game total in WSU history. He became the third-fastest Cougar to reach 1,000 points and earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors. As a junior, he led the Pac-10 in scoring, earning his second First Team All-Pac-10 selection and setting a WSU single-season scoring record with 733 points. On January 18, 2020, Washington State retired his No. 1 jersey, making him only the second men’s basketball player in the university’s history to receive this honor.
He declared for the 2011 NBA draft and was selected 11th overall by the Golden State Warriors. In his first 13 seasons, Thompson was a key component of the Warriors, notably forming the “Splash Brothers” duo with Stephen Curry. He played a pivotal role in securing four NBA championships for the team in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
