Kyle Hartzell was born on October 9, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up in Dundalk, Maryland. He began his lacrosse career as a freshman in high school, originally playing as an attackman. He attended CCBC-Essex, where he started as a midfielder before transitioning to Long Stick Midfield (LSM) and winning an NJCAA Championship in 2004. Hartzell then walked on to the lacrosse team at Salisbury University, where he primarily played defense, eventually captaining the team to a 23-0 season and a national championship in 2007. During his senior year at Salisbury, he recorded 42 caused turnovers and 83 ground balls, earning him the team’s defensive MVP award and Third Team All-American honors.
Following his collegiate success, Hartzell embarked on a professional career spanning Major League Lacrosse (MLL), National Lacrosse League (NLL), and the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL), from 2008 to 2023. He achieved two Major League Lacrosse championships in 2010 with the Chesapeake Bayhawks and in 2015 with the New York Lizards. He also secured an NLL championship in 2010 with the Washington Stealth. Hartzell played for Team USA three times, earning a bronze medal at the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, a silver medal at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championship, and a gold medal at the 2018 World Lacrosse Championship.
Throughout his professional career, Hartzell accumulated numerous accolades including multiple All-Star selections in both MLL and PLL. He holds the record for the most points (21) and most 2-pointers (9) in a season by a defenseman in MLL history. Recognized for his defensive skill and distinctive playing style, he was also the first defenseman ever to win the professional Championship Weekend MVP award in 2010. After retiring from professional play in 2023, Hartzell continues to impact the sport as the Head Lacrosse Coach for the University of Texas at Austin and as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the Boston Cannons.
