David Lane Johnson was born on May 8, 1990, in Groveton, Texas. He attended Groveton High School, where he excelled in both football as an honorable mention All-state quarterback and in track and field, with a notable fourth-place finish in shot put at the 2008 UIL 1A State Championships. Johnson began his collegiate athletic career at Kilgore College in 2008, playing quarterback and tight end. He later transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where he joined the Sooners football team from 2009 to 2012. Initially serving as a practice squad quarterback, he transitioned through tight end and defensive end before settling as an offensive tackle in 2011 due to team needs and his demonstrated natural abilities.
Johnson’s professional journey began when the Philadelphia Eagles selected him fourth overall in the 2013 NFL Draft. He quickly became a starting right tackle and was instrumental in the Eagles’ success, contributing to their first-place finish in the NFC East as a rookie. Over the course of his career, Johnson has accumulated numerous accolades, including multiple Pro Bowl selections and First-team All-Pro honors. He also became a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Eagles, winning Super Bowl LII in 2018 and Super Bowl LIX in 2025. His consistent performance led to him becoming one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the NFL, signing significant contract extensions in 2016, 2019, 2023, and 2025.
Beyond his on-field achievements, Johnson is known for his advocacy for mental health awareness. He has publicly addressed his own struggles and partnered with organizations like Kooth, a mental health service for young people. His commitment to community is also evident through his substantial donation to Kilgore College for the development of “The Lane” Athletic Performance Center. In recent years, he has also explored creative ventures, joining fellow Eagles teammates to form the vocal group “The Philly Specials,” releasing successful Christmas albums, and even participating in WrestleMania XL in 2024.
