Lauren Jackson

Born on May 11, 1981, in Albury, New South Wales, Lauren Elizabeth Jackson inherited her passion and talent for basketball from her parents, both former national team players. By the age of six, she declared her intention to play for the Australian national team, a goal she would achieve by age 16. Her early career saw her join the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) basketball team in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) in 1997, where she demonstrated prodigious skill, leading the AIS to a WNBL championship in the 1998-99 season. Jackson later joined the Canberra Capitals, where she continued to build a dominant domestic career, securing multiple championships and individual accolades. Her success in Australia laid the foundation for an international career that would cement her status as one of the sport’s all-time greats.

In 2001, Jackson was the first overall pick in the WNBA draft, selected by the Seattle Storm. Over 12 seasons with the Storm, she became a foundational player, leading the team to two WNBA championships in 2004 and 2010, earning the Finals MVP award in 2010. Her time in the WNBA was marked by numerous individual awards, including three WNBA MVP titles, multiple All-WNBA First Team selections, and the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 2007. Off the court, Jackson has been recognized for her advocacy, working with domestic violence charities and supporting children’s sports initiatives. After an initial retirement in 2016 due to recurring injuries, she made a remarkable comeback in 2022, playing in the NBL1 East and WNBL, and representing Australia in the 2024 Paris Olympics before her final retirement.
