Linvoy Primus MBE enjoyed an excellent football career that lasted for 18 years and included 433professional appearances. He was born to Caribbean-born parents and he began his career at the youth level with Charlton Athletic. He signed his first professional contract with the club in 1992 but began to get frustrated with the lack of playing opportunities.
This saw his move to Barnet in 1994, where he made 127 appearances and scored seven goals during his three-year stay. His solidity defensively made him the first name on the team sheet and encouraged Reading to make a move for the right-back. He made 94 appearances for the club and scored one goal. His performances with the Royals saw Primus gain interest from Portsmouth.
He signed for Pompey in 2000, and this would be the club where he would enjoy the most success. After initially struggling to break into the side, he finally managed to achieve his spot during the 2002-03 season. He was an integral part of their defence and was named at the club’s player of the season as well as the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year. The constant changing of managers at Pompey meant that he couldn’t maintain his starting position and injuries meant that he almost had to cut short his career. However, he enjoyed one last season of injury-free action during the 2006-07 campaign. He was loaned out to Charlton, before returning to Pompey for one final season.Unfortunately, injuries took their toll and he was forced to retire in 2009. However, the respect thatthe club had for his service meant that they named a stand in honour of the former player.
