About

Lucy Delap was born and holds an MA and PhD. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a recognition of her contributions to historical scholarship. Throughout her career, she has held significant academic positions, currently serving as Professor of Modern British and Gender History at the University of Cambridge and as a Fellow of Murray Edwards College. Her research focuses on various aspects of history, including feminism, gender, sexuality, labor, and religion. She is also a senior associate of History & Policy, an initiative connecting historical research with contemporary policy debates.

Delap’s work is characterized by its breadth and its focus on detailed historical analysis. Key publications include “The Feminist Avant-Garde: Transatlantic Encounters of the early twentieth century” (2007), “Knowing Their Place: Domestic Service in Twentieth Century Britain” (2011), and “Feminisms: a global history” (2020). These works have contributed to a deeper understanding of historical social structures and movements. She has received several awards for her contributions, including the Royal Historical Society Public History Prize for Policy and Public Debate in 2018 for her work on the history of child sexual abuse, the Pilkington Prize, and the Women’s History Network Prize.

Her current research investigates disabled people’s experiences within the labor force, as evidenced by her recent publication, “Slow Workers: Labelling and Labouring in Britain, c. 1909–1955” (2023). She actively participates in scholarly discourse and collaborations, such as the New York – Cambridge Training Collaboration (NYCTC) and “The Business of Women’s Words” project, which examines feminist publishing. Delap has also served as Chair of the History Faculty, further demonstrating her leadership within the academic community.
