Malaika Mihambo, born on February 3, 1994, in Heidelberg, Germany, is a German athlete specializing in the long jump. Her early life in Oftersheim, with a Tanzanian father and German mother, shaped her perspective. She began engaging with sports at eight years old, participating in judo, athletics, and ballet. Mihambo pursued higher education, studying political science at the University of Mannheim, where she graduated in 2016. Since April 2019, she has been pursuing a postgraduate master’s degree in environmental sciences at the University of Hagen, demonstrating her commitment to academic and social engagement beyond her athletic career.
Mihambo’s athletic career started around 2009, making her mark as the German under-16 heptathlon champion. Her progression in long jump saw her competing in the 2011 World Youth Championships and the 2012 World Junior Championships. She won her first major senior event at the 2014 European Team Championships, setting a championship record of 6.90 meters. In 2015, she secured gold at the European U23 Championships. The 2016 Rio Olympics saw her narrowly miss a medal, finishing fourth, but she earned a bronze at the European Athletics Championships in the same year. Despite a serious foot injury in 2017, Mihambo recovered to become a dominant force in her sport.
Her career reached international prominence with a gold medal at the 2018 European Athletics Championships in Berlin. In 2019, she achieved a personal best jump of 7.30 meters, leading to her first World Championship title in Doha and winning the IAAF Diamond League. Mihambo continued her success by winning the Olympic gold medal at Tokyo 2020 with a 7.00-meter leap. She was named Germany’s Sportswoman of the Year for three consecutive years (2019-2020-2021). Her second successive World Championship gold came in 2022 in Eugene with a jump of 7.12 meters. In 2024, she earned a gold medal at the European Championships in Rome with a season-best of 7.22m, followed by a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics with a jump of 6.98m. She also secured a silver medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and a bronze at the 2025 European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn.
