Malcolm Justin Marx was born on July 13, 1994, in Germiston, South Africa. His early rugby career began in the backline during his school days at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, gradually transitioning through flanker and eight-man positions. A significant turning point came in his final year of school when former Springbok coach Heynene Meyer recommended a move to the front row as a hooker. This positional change led to his selection for the SA Schools side in 2012, where he played against formidable teams such as France and England. In 2013, Marx further developed his skills playing for UJ in the Varsity Cup, making eight appearances and scoring four tries. He continued to excel in youth rugby, representing the Golden Lions U19 side and earning the Golden Lions U19 Forward of the Year award.
Marx made his senior debut for the Golden Lions in the 2014 Vodacom Cup and was also included in the Lions’ Super Rugby squad for the 2014 season. His consistent performances with the Lions were instrumental in their reach to the 2016 Super Rugby final. His contributions to the team were recognized with multiple awards in 2017 while playing for the Lions, including Super Rugby Player of the Year, Supporters Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year, and Most Valued Player of the Year. In 2018, he finished as the Lions’ top try-scorer for the season and is now the joint top try scorer in Lions history with 27 tries, a record he shares with Courtnall Skosan and Lionel Mapoe. His exceptional form earned him a place in the Springbok squad in 2016.
His international career with the Springboks began in 2016, making his debut against New Zealand. By 2017, Marx became a regular starter, earning Man of the Match honors against France. He played a pivotal role in South Africa’s Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level of the sport. Although a knee injury ruled him out of most of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, his presence and contributions to the squad were significant. Beyond the field, Marx has also made a mark in brand partnerships, collaborating with various companies. He currently plays for Kubota Spears in the Japan Rugby League One, having joined the team in August 2020.
