Tony Cascarino is a former footballer, famous for playing at various French and British clubs and for his successful international career playing for the Republic of Ireland national team. Cascarino has become a popular cult media figure since hanging up his boots, regularly presenting shows on TalkSPORT radio, taking part in the Celebrity Bainisteoir reality television series and Celebrity Poker Club and appearing on Sky Sports in England. He also writes for The Times and Ireland’s Hot Press magazine, and produced his brutally honest and highly acclaimed autobiography in 2000, Full Time: The Secret Life of Tony Cascarino.
Born in Kent, Cascarino began his professional career at Gillingham, scoring 78 goals for the side before joining Millwall, where he began an incredibly successful partnership with England striker Teddy Sheringham which saw them score 99 goals between them in three seasons. In the years that followed he played at British clubs including Aston Villa, Celtic and Chelsea, before moving to France where he played for Marseille, Nancy and Red Star 93. He also earned 88 caps for the Republic of Ireland, overcoming controversy over his eligibility to play for the side.
Since retiring from football Cascarino has focused on an interesting and varied media career, also becoming a semi-professional poker player and appearing on the TV series Celebrity Poker Club. Cascarino is referenced in the track “All Your Kayfabe Friends” by Welsh band Los Campesinos!, cementing his status as a cult figure. He managed Killeshin GAA Club of County Laois to victory in season 4 of reality series Celebrity Bainisteoir, and is often in demand to appear on radio and television including his presenting slot on the world’s biggest sports radio station, TalkSPORT radio.
