Martin Peters was a high profile professional footballer who still commands huge audiences when he speaks about his time in the game. He is a great sports personality to have host a sports award evening, a charity function or to inspire young audiences. When Martin was bought by Tottenham from West Ham back in 1970 it was for the new highest ever fee of £200, 000 when he was aged only 26.
In a tough side at West Ham with many 1966 World Cup stars such as Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst, with Spurs Peters became a firm fan favourite after scoring on his debut. A versatile player with great movement and reading of the game, he won his first trophy with Spurs in the League Cup in 1971. That year the side also came third in the league and at the end of a season that also saw a long FA Cup run, Peters was the only Spurs player to play in all of the clubs 58 competitive games and in that time he netted 19 times. In a half decade spell with Tottenham, Peters played 287 times and scored on 87 occasions as well as turning out for England 67 times. A fine midfielder in his time, with 20 English goals to his name, Martin Peters has since released an autobiography, has worked din insurance and has been inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
