Martin Stanford Peters was born on November 8, 1943, in Plaistow, Essex. His early years during the Second World War included evacuation to Shropshire. Peters began his football journey at 15, joining West Ham United as an apprentice in the summer of 1959. He quickly demonstrated versatility, playing in various positions including goalkeeper, and made his first-team debut on Good Friday 1962 against Cardiff City. Under manager Ron Greenwood, Peters developed into a prominent right-half, contributing to West Ham’s success, including winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965.

Peters’ career saw significant progression, leading to his England debut in May 1966. He became a key component of Sir Alf Ramsey’s “wingless wonders” system, eventually scoring England’s second goal in the historic 1966 World Cup Final against West Germany. In 1970, he became Britain’s first £200,000 footballer, moving to Tottenham Hotspur where he continued to collect silverware, including the League Cup in 1971 and 1973, and the UEFA Cup in 1972. Peters also played in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, scoring against West Germany again.

He concluded his playing career at Norwich City, making over 200 appearances and being voted Player of the Season twice (1976, 1977), before a brief player-coach and managerial stint at Sheffield United. Peters received an MBE for services to football in 1978 and was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He died on December 21, 2019, at the age of 76, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
