Phillip Dutton is an Australian-born two-time Olympic gold-winning equestrian rider and recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia. He was inducted into the Australian Sports Hall of Fame in 2001, but he now competes for the USA.
Dutton pursued his passion for riding in Australia until 1991 but relocated to the U.S. with ambitions of becoming more internationally competitive. He won gold medals for Australia in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games as a member of Australia’s Eventing Team, and he has gone on to represent Australia in four World Equestrian Games. Dutton has dominated the U.S. eventing circuit over the years, achieving the USEA Leading Rider of the Year a total of eight times with back-to-back wins from 2000 to 2006. He was crowned the number one FEI World Event Rider in 2005. In 2006, Dutton switched nationality to the U.S. and took second at the prestigious four-star event the Rolex Kentucky Three Day and team gold and an individual silver medal at the Pan American Games in 2007. Dutton has competed in the 2008 and 2016 summer Olympics for the U.S., winning bronze in the latter.
Phillip and his wife, Evie, operate True Prospect Farm in Pennsylvania and Red Oak Farm in South Carolina. Dutton spends much of his time coaching younger riders. He has also coached many USEF Eventing High-Performance riders and was subsequently voted the 2009 Developing Rider Coach of the Year. Phillip is a founding member of the Eventer Riders Association of North America, serving as president in 2012 and 2013. He is the founder of Philip Dutton Eventing and regularly hosts camps and charitable events.
