Michael Jerome Oher was born on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee. His early life involved significant challenges, including a mother battling addiction and periods of homelessness. He attended eleven different schools during his elementary years and was placed in foster care at age seven. A pivotal turning point came when he was accepted into Briarcrest Christian School. While there, he initially struggled academically but improved his grades significantly through a focused home study program and online courses, achieving a 2.52 GPA by the end of his senior year. He excelled in football, earning Division II (2A) Lineman of the Year in 2003 and First-team Tennessee All-State honors. His journey through high school and early college was chronicled in Michael Lewis’s 2006 book, “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game,” which was later adapted into a 2009 film.
Oher played college football for the Ole Miss Rebels, the alma mater of his guardians, Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy. He started ten games as a guard in his freshman year, earning first-team freshman All-American honors. He then transitioned to left tackle for subsequent seasons. During his college career, he was a two-time First-team All-SEC selection (2007, 2008) and was recognized as a unanimous All-American in 2008. He graduated with a degree in criminal justice in the spring of 2009. His academic and athletic achievements at Ole Miss paved the way for his professional career.
In 2009, Michael Oher was selected by the Baltimore Ravens as the 23rd pick in the first round of the NFL draft. He signed a five-year contract and played primarily as a right and left tackle. He was a key offensive lineman for the Ravens, contributing to their victory in Super Bowl XLVII in 2013. After five seasons with the Ravens, Oher signed with the Tennessee Titans in 2014 and then with the Carolina Panthers in 2015. With the Panthers, he had one of his most successful professional seasons, protecting quarterback Cam Newton’s blind side and playing in Super Bowl 50 in 2016.
