United States Michaela Onyenwere is a professional basketball player known for her collegiate and WNBA career, marked by a Rookie of the Year award and international play.

Michaela Nne Onyenwere was born on August 10, 1999, to Edith and Peter Onyenwere. Her father competed in track and field for Nigeria in the Olympics. She attended Grandview High School in Aurora, Colorado, where she became a highly decorated athlete. During her senior year in 2016-17, she was named Ms. Colorado Basketball, the 5A Girl’s Basketball Player of the Year, and the Colorado Gatorade Player of the Year for the third consecutive year. She was also recognized as a 2017 McDonald’s All-American, leading Grandview to the 2017 Colorado 5A State Championship. Onyenwere developed her skills as a forward, demonstrating early potential that would shape her basketball career.
Onyenwere played college basketball for the UCLA Bruins from 2017 to 2021. She was a four-year letter winner and concluded her collegiate career as the fourth overall leading scorer in the program’s history with 1,888 points. Her performance earned her recognition as a Third-Team All-American by both the Associated Press and USBWA in 2019-20 and 2020-21. She was also a three-time All Pac-12 honoree from 2019 to 2021 and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team in 2017-18. Internationally, Onyenwere represented Team USA, earning a Silver Medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, where she averaged 10.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Her consistent and impactful play at UCLA prepared her for professional basketball.
Michaela Onyenwere began her professional journey in the WNBA when she was selected sixth overall in the 2021 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty. In her inaugural season, she was unanimously named the 2021 Associated Press Rookie of the Year and was included in the 2021 WNBA All-Rookie Team. She led all rookies in points per game (8.6) and total points (275). After two seasons with the Liberty, she was traded to the Phoenix Mercury in 2023, and then to the Chicago Sky in 2024, where she continues her WNBA career. Additionally, Onyenwere has played overseas, including stints with Uni Girona CB (2021–2022), CB Avenida (2022–2023), OGM Ormanspor (2023–2024), and Jiangsu Phoenix (2025).
