About

John Michael “Mick” Mulvaney was born on July 21, 1967, in Alexandria, Virginia, to Michael and Kathleen Mulvaney. He spent his formative years in Charlotte, North Carolina, and later in Indian Land, South Carolina. Mulvaney pursued higher education at Georgetown University, graduating with honors in 1989 with a degree in international economics, commerce, and finance. He then earned a Juris Doctor (JD) in 1992 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he focused on antitrust law. Following law school, Mulvaney practiced law from 1992 to 1997 with the firm James, McElroy and Diehl. He subsequently joined his family’s real estate business and became a minority shareholder and owner-operator in the Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina restaurant chain, participating in the Owners and Presidents Management Program at Harvard Business School. These early experiences in law and business laid the groundwork for his future career in public service.

Mulvaney’s political career began in the South Carolina General Assembly, where he served from 2007 to 2011. He was first elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2006 and later to the State Senate in 2008. During his time in the state legislature, he served on various committees, including Judiciary, Labor/Commerce/Industry, Medical Affairs, Agriculture/Natural Resources, and Corrections. He was recognized for his legislative efforts, notably as Freshman Legislator of the Year in 2006 for his work on the Woman’s Ultrasound Right to Know Act and as Legislator of the Year in 2010 for his contributions to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). From 2011 to 2017, Mulvaney represented South Carolina’s 5th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He aligned with the Tea Party movement and was a founding member of the Freedom Caucus. In Congress, he focused on fiscal conservatism and actively pursued legislative initiatives, sponsoring 99 bills and cosponsoring 796.

His federal service expanded significantly in the Trump administration. He was nominated as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in December 2016 and confirmed in February 2017, serving until March 2020. During this period, he also held additional acting roles, including acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) from November 2017 to December 2018, and acting White House Chief of Staff from January 2019 to March 2020. After these roles, he served as the U.S. Special Envoy for Northern Ireland from March 2020 until January 2021. Following his departure from government, Mulvaney transitioned to a career in media, becoming an on-air contributor for CBS News in 2022, and later joining NewsNation and CNBC as a contributor, where he provides analysis on political and economic topics.
