Born in Preston, but raised in Cheltenham, Summerbee was a talented footballer as a child and joined Swindon Town in 1959. After making more than 400 appearances for City, he left the club in 1975 to join Burnley. A year later he briefly moved to Blackpool before signing with Stockport County. He was their player-manager in the 1978–79 season, before retiring from the game. He did return for one last match, turning out for non-league Mossley in an FA Cup tie in 1980. On the international stage, he earned eight caps for England, and represented them at the 1970 World Cup.
