Born Musetta van der Merwe on May 26, 1963, in Durban, South Africa, Musetta Vander was introduced to the entertainment world at a young age. Her mother, a ballet teacher, led to Vander’s stage debut at age four. She performed in numerous dance productions including “Giselle,” “Coppelia,” “The Student Prince,” and “Showboat.” Following school, she qualified as a ballet teacher. She earned a BA in Communications and Psychology before becoming an anchor host for an MTV-like television show in South Africa. Her early career also included appearances as a “dream girl” in over 20 music videos for artists such as Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Tina Turner, Elton John, and Chris Isaak.
Vander’s acting career gained momentum with her critically acclaimed stage performance in the South African play “Soweto’s Burning.” This led to a transition to the big screen, where she collaborated with her husband, Jeff Celentano, on films like “Under the Hula Moon” (1995) and “Gunshy” (1998). She appeared alongside prominent actors such as Kevin Kline and Will Smith in “Wild Wild West” (1999), George Clooney and John Turturro in “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000), and John Hurt and Louis Gossett Jr. in “Monolith” (1993). Her television credits include guest roles in popular series including “Star Trek: Voyager,” “Stargate SG-1,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” She also portrayed Sindel in “Mortal Kombat Annihilation” (1997) and Lady Elara in the video games “Dune 2000” (1998) and “Emperor: Battle for Dune” (2002).
More recently, Vander has continued to expand her acting portfolio with roles in films like “Kicking & Screaming” (2005), “Transylmania” (2009), and “Under the Bed” (2012). She has made guest appearances on television shows such as “NCIS,” “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders,” and “Hawaii Five-0.” In addition to her on-screen work, she made a return to the stage, combining her dance and acting skills in an adaptation of Molière’s “The Bourgeois Gentleman” at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Her work also extends to editing, with a credit for “Celebrity Entrepreneur” (2018).
