Mychael Anthony Knight Jr. was born on April 11, 1978, in Nuremberg, Germany. He spent his early childhood in Montgomery, Alabama, before graduating from Washingtonville Senior High School in Washingtonville, New York, in 1996. Later that year, he began his college education at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising, which he completed in 2001.
After his undergraduate studies, Knight commenced his career in the fashion industry in Atlanta, Georgia. He started as an intern at Wilbourn Exclusives in 2001. By 2002, he transitioned to working as a fashion stylist in the music industry. In 2005, Knight auditioned for the second season of “Project Runway” but was not selected. He re-auditioned in 2006 and was accepted as a contestant for the third season, where he gained recognition, winning the Fan Favorite award and placing fourth overall in the competition.
Following his success on “Project Runway,” Knight launched his own label, Mychael Knight, in 2007, which debuted on BET’s “Rip the Runway.” In the same year, he designed a line of custom tees for Starbucks Corporation. He expanded his brand in 2008 by launching Kitty & Dick, a lingerie label for both men and women, and a unisex fragrance named MajK. Knight participated in “Project Runway: All Star Challenge” in 2009 and as a contestant on “Project Runway: All Stars” season 3 in 2013, continuing to showcase his designs. He passed away on October 17, 2017, at the age of 39.
