A versatile defender capable of playing at centre or right-back, he initially began his journey as a youth player at Scunthorpe United. After earning a professional contract with the club, he quickly broke into the first-team squad through consistent performances and dedication on the pitch.
In 1991, Cox joined First Division side Aston Villa for a fee of £400,000. During his time with the club, he made over 50 appearances across all competitions. A major highlight of this period was playing in the team’s victory over Manchester United in the 1994 Football League Cup Final. Throughout his career, he amassed over 500 appearances in the Football League and earned international recognition by being capped at the Under-21 level by England.
