Nick Buckland

Nicholas Buckland was born on June 9, 1989, in Nottingham, England. His family has a strong connection to ice sports, with his mother, Jean, being an ice dancer, his younger brother, Joseph, also a figure skater, and his grandfather, Bryan, a speed skater. This familial background in skating set the stage for Nick’s own career in the sport. He began skating at the age of two, introduced to the ice by his grandparents at the Nottingham Ice Stadium. Early in his career, he trained at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham and also pursued higher education, studying law at Nottingham Trent University.

Buckland formed an ice dance partnership with Penny Coomes in 2005. Their senior international debut occurred at the 2008 Finlandia Trophy, where they finished ninth. The duo went on to achieve significant milestones, including winning six international medals and becoming five-time British national champions in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2018. They participated in three Winter Olympic Games: Vancouver 2010 (20th place), Sochi 2014 (10th place in ice dancing, 10th in mixed team), and PyeongChang 2018 (11th place). A notable event in his career was undergoing life-saving cardiac surgery to address an irregular heartbeat prior to the Sochi 2014 Olympics.

After their competitive skating careers concluded, Buckland and Coomes transitioned into other roles within the sport. In 2018, they served as stunt doubles and consultants for the television drama “Torvill & Dean,” which portrayed the true story of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. This role allowed them to contribute their expertise to a project celebrating the history of British ice dancing. Buckland has also been involved in coaching and choreography, remaining connected to the figure skating community.
