Nicola Mary Coughlan was born on January 9, 1987, in Galway, Ireland, and grew up in Oranmore. Her acting aspirations began at age five. She pursued formal training at the Oxford School of Drama and the Birmingham School of Acting. After facing initial challenges and returning home due to financial difficulties post-drama school, Coughlan’s career began to solidify. Her breakthrough arrived in 2018 as Clare Devlin in the Channel 4 sitcom “Derry Girls.” This critically acclaimed show, set during The Troubles, garnered widespread praise for its humor and heart, with Coughlan’s portrayal contributing significantly to its success.
In 2020, Coughlan gained wider international recognition with her role as Penelope Featherington in the Netflix period drama “Bridgerton.” The series became a global phenomenon, further establishing her as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry. Her work on “Bridgerton” led to a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2021, and further nominations for her lead role in the third season. She also received an IFTA Film & Drama Awards nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama and was honored with the 2021 Irish Film and Television Academy Rising Star Award.
Coughlan continued to expand her diverse portfolio in 2023, appearing as Diplomat Barbie in the film “Barbie” and voicing the Playroom Fairy in “The Velveteen Rabbit.” In March 2024, she took on a leading role as Maggie Donovan in the Channel 4 dramedy “Big Mood,” earning a British Academy Television Awards nomination for Best Female Performance in a Comedy. Her notable stage work includes a West End debut in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” in 2018 and a Royal National Theatre debut in “The Playboy of the Western World” from 2025 to 2026.
