Nnemkadi Chinwe Victoria “Nneka” Ogwumike, born on July 2, 1990, in Tomball, Texas, is an American professional basketball player. She attended Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, where she led her team to a 5A State Championship in her senior year. During her high school career, Ogwumike was named a WBCA All-American and earned MVP honors at the 2008 WBCA High School All-America Game. She then continued her academic and athletic career at Stanford University, where she consistently led the Cardinal to the Final Four multiple times.
After a distinguished college career, Ogwumike was drafted first overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2012 WNBA draft. She quickly made an impact, earning the WNBA Rookie of the Year award in 2012. Throughout her career with the Sparks from 2012 to 2023, she achieved numerous accolades, including the WNBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 2016 and leading the Sparks to a WNBA Championship in the same year. In 2021, she was named to The W25, recognizing her as one of the top 25 players in the league’s first 25 years. Beyond her playing career, Ogwumike was elected President of the WNBA Players Association in 2016 and re-elected in 2019, demonstrating her commitment to player advocacy.
In 2024, Ogwumike joined the Seattle Storm, continuing her professional basketball journey. Her international career included stints in Poland for CCC Polkowice, China for Guangdong Vermilion Birds, and Russia for Dynamo Kursk, where she won the 2017 Euroleague title. Ogwumike is also actively involved in philanthropy, serving as a mentor for the WNBA Changemakers Collective’s collaboration with VOICEINSPORT, aimed at empowering girls in sports. In August 2024, she took over leadership of the non-profit voting rights organization “More Than a Vote,” focusing its efforts on women’s reproductive rights.
