About

Born in Muswell Hill, London, on February 28, 1967, to Ghanaian immigrants, Ozwald Boateng developed an early interest in tailoring. Inspired by his father’s suits and receiving his first purple mohair suit from his mother at age eight, he gained initial experience sewing linings at 14. While studying computer science at Southgate College, he was introduced to cutting and designing by his girlfriend. Utilizing his mother’s sewing machine, Boateng began creating and selling designs to fellow students, leading him to switch his focus to fashion and design, ultimately culminating in his debut collection being sold to a menswear shop in Covent Garden and establishing his first studio in Portobello Road in 1991.

Boateng made history in 1994 by staging his first catwalk presentation during Paris Fashion Week, becoming the first tailor to do so. Mentored by Tommy Nutter, this success enabled him to open his boutique on Vigo Street, Savile Row, in 1995. His contemporary approach revitalized Savile Row, attracting a younger clientele and influencing menswear design. In 2002, Boateng fully relocated to Savile Row, and in 2008, he launched his flagship store and headquarters at No. 30 Savile Row, co-designed with architect David Adjaye. This establishment notably remains the only Black-owned store on Savile Row. Beyond bespoke services, he also produces two ready-to-wear collections annually. His contributions to fashion were recognized with a 20-year retrospective at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2005.

Over his career, Boateng has engaged in significant collaborations and projects. He was appointed Creative Director of Menswear at Givenchy by LVMH President Bernard Arnault in 2003, showcasing his first collection in Paris in 2004. He also designed a Super-Premium credit card for Coutts in 2004 and amenity kits for Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class, significantly increasing their pick rate. In 2018, British Airways chose Boateng to design their new uniform, which launched in 2023 as part of their centenary celebrations. His work extends to costume design for numerous films and TV shows, and he has directed several film projects, including ‘Why Style Matters’ for BBC4, exploring the significance of Savile Row. His commitment to social causes is evident through his involvement with the REACH committee and co-founding the Made in Africa Foundation.
