Patrick Justin McAfee was born on May 2, 1987, in Plum, Pennsylvania. He attended Plum High School, excelling in soccer, volleyball, and football. A national Punt, Pass, and Kick champion, he earned a scholarship to West Virginia University, where he played as a placekicker for the Mountaineers from 2005 to 2008. His college career was marked by notable plays, including a successful onside kick against Louisville in 2005 and a career-long 52-yard field goal in 2008. He was named to the ESPN All-Bowl Team in 2007, was a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award, and earned second-team All-Big East honors. In his senior year, he set a school record for all-time scoring and was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award.
McAfee was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, pick 222. He served as the Colts’ punter and kickoff specialist for eight seasons, participating in Super Bowl XLIV in his rookie year. His NFL achievements include two Pro Bowl selections (2014, 2016) and being named First-Team All-Pro in 2014. He holds a career punting average of 46.4 yards, with a long of 74 yards. McAfee retired from the NFL in February 2017 due to knee operations and a fractured relationship with team management.
Following his NFL career, McAfee embarked on a successful media career. He initially joined Barstool Sports before establishing Pat McAfee Inc. in 2018. His company produces “The Pat McAfee Show,” which gained significant popularity, leading to partnerships with SiriusXM and later a multi-year deal with ESPN. He also became a color commentator for WWE in 2019, making sporadic appearances before becoming a full-time commentator for SmackDown in 2021 and Raw in 2025. McAfee continues to expand his media presence across various platforms.
