Peter Michael Tuchman was born in New York City in 1957. Raised on the Upper West Side, he is the son of Shoshana Itzkovich and Marcel Tuchman, both of whom were Holocaust survivors who immigrated to the United States in 1949. His father, a doctor, practiced medicine from 1950 until 2017. Peter Tuchman pursued higher education at the University of Massachusetts, where he focused on economics and agriculture.
In 1985, specifically on May 23rd, Tuchman began his career on the floor of the NYSE as a teletypist, securing the position through a connection made by his father. This marked the start of his long-standing presence on the exchange floor. Over the decades, he has become known for his expressive reactions to market fluctuations, earning him the moniker “Einstein of Wall Street” due to his appearance. He is also frequently referred to as the “most photographed trader on Wall Street,” as his image often accompanies news stories detailing market volatility.
His career includes a significant tenure with Quattro Securities, which he joined in 2011. Tuchman is known for executing large trades, reportedly handling hundreds of millions of dollars of stock on a typical day, with his largest single trade reaching 10 million shares. He has expressed reservations about electronic trading, stating that he believes it has not made the market more productive and that traditional floor trading offered greater communication and transparency. In March 2020, Tuchman contracted the novel coronavirus, a period during which two other individuals on the NYSE also tested positive.
