Phil Villapiano

Philip James Villapiano was born on February 26, 1949, in Long Branch, New Jersey. He pursued his college football career at Bowling Green, where his talent as a linebacker was recognized with the Mid-America Conference Player of the Year award. His performance led to his selection by the Oakland Raiders in the 2nd round (45th overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft. He quickly established himself as a key defensive player for the Raiders, renowned for his speed, pass coverage abilities, and knack for making critical plays.

Villapiano spent nine seasons with the Oakland Raiders, from 1971 to 1979, becoming one of the team’s anchors during a successful era. During his tenure, he earned four Pro Bowl selections (1973, 1974, 1975, 1976) and was recognized as a First-team All-Pro twice (1975, 1976). A highlight of his career with the Raiders was winning Super Bowl XI in 1977, where his momentum-changing goal-line tackle and forced fumble against the Minnesota Vikings played a pivotal role in the team’s victory. Villapiano concluded his professional football career with the Buffalo Bills, playing from 1980 to 1983, bringing his total NFL seasons to 13.

Following his retirement from professional football, Villapiano has remained involved in the football community and various philanthropic endeavors. He was inducted into the Reese’s Senior Bowl Hall of Fame in March 2018 and has been acknowledged as a candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His commitment to charitable causes includes work with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Jimmy V Foundation, and environmental initiatives like Save the Jersey Shore post-Hurricane Sandy. Villapiano also actively supports youth sports, advocating for flag football under the age of 14 for player safety.
