About

Phillipa Anne Soo was born on May 31, 1990, in Libertyville, Illinois. She developed an early interest in performing and graduated from the Juilliard School’s acting program in 2012. Shortly after graduating, Soo was cast as Natasha Rostova in the Off-Off-Broadway production of “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” (2012), a musical adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.” The show later moved Off-Broadway, where her performance attracted the attention of Lin-Manuel Miranda. In 2013, she also made her television debut with a recurring role as Lexi in the NBC series “Smash,” appearing in five episodes.

Soo’s career significantly advanced when Lin-Manuel Miranda invited her to read for his musical “Hamilton.” She originated the role of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in the Off-Broadway premiere at The Public Theater and continued with the role when the show transferred to Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2015. For her portrayal, Soo received a nomination for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical at the 70th Tony Awards in 2016 and won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album the same year. Her final performance in “Hamilton” was in July 2016. In 2020, a live stage recording of “Hamilton” was released on Disney+, earning her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. She continued her Broadway career, originating the title role in “Amélie” (2017) and appearing as Rebecca in “The Parisian Woman” (2017–2018).

Beyond the stage, Soo has expanded her presence into film and television. Her film credits include voice roles in animated features such as “Over the Moon” (2020) and “The One and Only Ivan” (2020), as well as live-action appearances in “The Broken Hearts Gallery” (2020) and “One True Loves” (2023), where she also served as an executive producer. On television, she held main roles in the CBS military drama “The Code” (2019) and the ABC medical drama “Doctor Odyssey” (2024–2025), with supporting roles in Hulu’s “Dopesick” (2021) and Apple TV+’s “Shining Girls” (2022). Soo co-wrote a children’s book, “Piper Chen Sings,” released in 2024, which became a New York Times best seller. Her continued work across various mediums highlights her versatility as an entertainer.
