Sutan Ibrahim Karim Amrullah, known professionally as Raja Gemini, was born on June 14, 1974, in Baldwin Park, California. With Dutch and Indonesian heritage, Raja’s early life included a six-year period spent in Bali, Indonesia, which influenced her artistic sensibilities. She pursued an education in art at California State University, Fullerton, focusing on art direction and illustration, before transitioning into a career as a make-up artist and female impersonator. Her drag career began in the early 1990s as a club kid named Crayola, drawing inspiration from goth and punk subcultures, showcasing an early dedication to avant-garde and experimental aesthetics.
Her career trajectory significantly advanced with her participation in reality television. From 2005 to 2009, Amrullah worked as a make-up artist on “America’s Next Top Model” for cycles four through twelve, working with notable clients such as Tyra Banks, Dita von Teese, and RuPaul. In 2011, Raja competed and won the third season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” earning the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar and establishing her as a prominent figure in the drag world.
