About

Born on January 31, 1958, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Ron James later moved to Halifax. He pursued his education at Acadia University, studying history and political science with aspirations of becoming a history teacher. While at Acadia, he was influenced by Evelyn Garbary, who led the theatre program. After graduating, James relocated to Toronto in the 1980s and joined The Second City troupe. During this period, he honed his comedic skills, and in 1989, he received a Genie Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film “Something About Love.”

In the early 1990s, James spent three years in Los Angeles, where he appeared in a late-night syndicated series by Ron Howard’s Imagine TV, “My Talk Show” (1990-1991), playing Bucky Fergus. Despite guest appearances in shows like “Get A Life” and “Wings,” and a role in the movie “Ernest Rides Again” (1993), his time in Hollywood involved challenges and accumulated debt. He returned to Canada in 1993 and transformed his experiences into the 1994 stage show “Up & Down in Shaky Town: One Man’s Journey through the California Dream,” which was also broadcast as a special on The Comedy Network. Inspired by Scottish comedian Billy Connolly, James then transitioned into stand-up comedy.

His career in Canada flourished, marked by various achievements. James performed voice work for animated series such as “Star Wars: Ewoks” and “RoboCop: The Animated Series.” He also acted in films like “Tommy Boy” (1995) as a Bank Guard. He starred in the television series “Blackfly” (2001-2002) as Benny ‘Blackfly’ Broughton and Stateside Bobby, and in “Made in Canada.” James received Canadian Comedy Awards for Best Stand-up (2000) and Best One Person Show for “The Road Between My Ears” (2004). He earned a Gemini Award as part of the writing team for “This Hour Has 22 Minutes.” From 2009 to 2014, he hosted his own CBC Television series, “The Ron James Show,” where he served as creator, writer, and executive producer. He is also the author of the national bestseller “All Over the Map: Rambles and Ruminations from the Canadian Road,” published in 2021.
