Rory Gibbs was born on April 3, 1994, in Marlow, Buckinghamshire. He began his rowing career after sustaining injuries while playing rugby. He attended Millfield School and later Oxford Brookes University BC, where he commenced his rowing training. Early in his career, Gibbs achieved significant success at the Henley Royal Regatta, winning the Temple Challenge Cup in 2016, followed by victories in the Ladies’ Challenge Plate in 2017 and 2018, and the Stewards’ Challenge Cup in 2019. In 2022 and 2023, he contributed to successive Grand Challenge Cup victories in crews representing Leander/Oxford Brookes. In 2024, Rory Gibbs secured a gold medal in the Men’s eight at the Paris 2024 Olympic Rowing Regatta, bringing Team GB’s rowing tally to eight medals.
Gibbs first represented Great Britain at the U23 level, competing in the men’s eight at the 2015 U23 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv and the coxed four at the 2016 U23 World Championships. He joined the Great Britain senior squad in 2019, earning a gold medal in the coxless four at the 2019 European Rowing Championships and a bronze medal at the 2019 World Rowing Championships. The same crew continued their success in 2021, winning a second European gold medal in Varese, Italy, and gold at World Rowing Cup II, with a fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympic Regatta. Rory Gibbs later achieved two consecutive World Rowing Championship titles in the men’s eight in 2022 and 2023. He recently retired from the GB Rowing Team in February 2025.
