Rutgerus Johannes Martinus van Nistelrooij, known as Ruud van Nistelrooy, was born on July 1, 1976. He began his football career in 1993 at Den Bosch, transitioning from central midfielder to centre-forward and scoring 12 goals in 31 games in the 1996–97 season. He then moved to Heerenveen in 1997, where he scored 13 goals in 31 matches in his single season. His prolific scoring continued at PSV Eindhoven from 1998 to 2001, where he secured two Eredivisie titles and won the Dutch Player of the Year award twice. His impressive record at PSV, including 31 goals in 34 league games in his first season and 29 in his second, attracted significant interest from top European clubs, most notably Manchester United.
Van Nistelrooy’s anticipated transfer to Manchester United in 2000 was delayed due to a serious knee injury, specifically a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. After a year of recovery, he finally joined Manchester United in 2001 for a British record fee of £19 million. His tenure at Old Trafford was highly successful, marked by winning the Premier League in 2002–03, the FA Cup in 2003–04, the Football League Cup in 2005–06, and the FA Community Shield in 2003. He was the Premier League’s top scorer in 2002–03 with 25 goals and became Manchester United’s all-time European record goalscorer at the time. He scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club before departing in 2006.
He continued his career at Real Madrid from 2006 to 2010, winning two La Liga titles and the Supercopa de España, and was the league’s top scorer in 2006–07 with 25 goals. Following spells at Hamburger SV and Málaga, he retired as a player in 2012. Post-retirement, Van Nistelrooy transitioned into coaching, working with PSV Eindhoven’s youth teams, and serving as an assistant coach for the Netherlands national team. He managed PSV’s first team from 2022 to 2023, wining the Johan Cruyff Shield and the KNVB Cup, and had a caretaker managerial role at Manchester United in 2024 before becoming manager of Leicester City in November 2024, a position he held until June 2025.
