Saina Nehwal is a world-renowned Indian professional badminton player who has made an impressive name for herself in the industry. Born on 17th March 1990 in Hisar, Saina was inclined towards sports from a very young age. Her passion for badminton was ingrained in her DNA as her parents, Harvir Singh and Usha Rani, were both national level volleyball players.
Saina started playing at the age of eight and soon became a national sensation, winning several national championships across categories. Her first achievement was the under-10 girls singles title at the Haryana State Championships. Thereafter, her successes just kept coming in, and she went on to become the first Indian woman to win a Super Series tournament, the Indonesian Open in 2009. Along with this, she has won a Bronze medal in the Olympics (London 2012) and the World Championships, a Gold at the Commonwealth Games, and a Silver and Bronze at the Asian Games.
Saina’s impressive career has been marked by several accolades and awards. In 2010, she received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour awarded by the Indian Government. She was also honored with the Arjuna Award in 2009, the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 2016, and the Padma Shri in 2010.
