Sakura Kokumai

Sakura Kokumai was born on October 2, 1992, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She began her karate training at the age of seven. Her talent was recognized early, leading to her selection for the U.S. Junior National Team at 14 years old. This marked the beginning of her extensive career representing the country in international events. Initially drawn to the social aspect of the dojo and the travel opportunities, her passion for the sport deepened as she matured, prompting her to establish more significant athletic goals. To pursue her Olympic aspirations, Kokumai relocated to California, where she lived with a host family, allowing her to dedicate herself fully as a professional athlete.

Kokumai’s career includes significant milestones, such as becoming the first American to qualify for the Olympics in karate. She also holds the distinction of being the only female athlete representing the United States in karate at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She has secured numerous national and international titles, including eight times as the USA National Champion (Senior) and four times as the Junior Pan American Champion. Her international performance includes a bronze medal at the 2012 World Karate Championships in Paris, France, and gold medals in individual kata at both the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games. Kokumai also served as a karate consultant for the ‘Karate Kid Musical’.

Her Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games saw her achieve a 5th place finish in the Individual Kata – Women event. Throughout her career, Kokumai has consistently demonstrated dedication and skill, participating in multiple World Championship events, including in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Beyond her competitive accomplishments, Kokumai advocates for perseverance, advising younger athletes to never give up and to stay focused, surrounded by positive influences, as hard work ultimately yields results.
