Samuel Anthony Mikulak was born on October 13, 1992, in Huntington Beach, California. His parents, both former gymnasts at the University of California, Berkeley, introduced him to the sport at age two. Mikulak quickly demonstrated talent, becoming a United States Junior National team member from 2007 to 2010. During this period, he secured multiple accolades, including the all-around, floor exercise, and vault titles at the 2010 Junior Olympic Nationals. He also consistently achieved silver medals in the all-around at the U.S. National Championships in the 14-15 year-old division from 2007 to 2009, and later claimed the Junior national all-around title in the 16-18 year-old division in 2010, alongside gold medals on pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar.
Mikulak continued his career at the University of Michigan, where he led the Wolverines men’s gymnastics team to NCAA team titles in 2013 and 2014. Individually, he earned eight NCAA championships, including the all-around title in 2011, 2013, and 2014, and several individual event titles. His senior career saw him become a six-time U.S. national all-around champion (2013–2016, 2018–2019), a significant milestone in American gymnastics. He competed in three Olympic Games: London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016, and Tokyo 2020. At the 2018 World Championships, he earned a bronze medal on the horizontal bar, marking his first individual World event medal. In 2015, he secured two gold medals at the Pan American Games in Toronto for team and all-around events, along with two bronze medals for floor and parallel bars.
After retiring from competitive gymnastics on August 9, 2021, Mikulak began his coaching career. In 2023, he joined EVO Gymnastics as a coach, where he notably coached pommel horse specialist Stephen Nedoroscik to two bronze medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Throughout his career, Mikulak has also been recognized for his contributions to the sport, receiving the Nissen-Emery Award in 2014 and the Longines Prize for Elegance in 2019. He has also spoken publicly about his experiences with mental health as an athlete, particularly regarding the pressures faced during the Olympic cycles.
