Sam Taylor

Sam Taylor, born on May 5, 1999, in Bullsbrook, Western Australia, emerged as a prominent figure in Australian rules football. The third of seven children, he received his education at Guildford Grammar School. His early career saw him playing at colts level for Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) in 2016, progressing to league level in 2017. As a graduate of the AFL Academy, he represented Western Australia in the AFL Under 18 Championships, earning All-Australian honors.

Taylor was drafted by the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants with pick 28 in the 2017 national draft. He made his AFL debut in Round 11 of the 2018 season against the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval. By 2022, he had solidified his position as one of the league’s top key defenders, achieving his first All-Australian selection and winning his first Kevin Sheedy Medal. His playing style is characterized by his ability to effectively shut down opponents and execute intercept marks in the backline. Taylor remained a key player for the Giants, demonstrating consistent performance in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

His career has included both successes and challenges. He featured in the 2019 AFL Grand Final with the GWS Giants. In 2020, his season was significantly impacted by septic arthritis in his pelvis and ankle, limiting him to four games. He sustained an ankle injury in 2021, resulting in a six-game absence. Despite a hamstring injury in 2023 that led to him missing seven games, he continued to be recognized for his defensive capabilities. In 2024, Taylor signed a seven-year contract extension with the GWS Giants, securing his tenure with the club until at least the end of the 2032 season.
