Sam Taylor

Sam Taylor, after earning All-Australian honors while representing Western Australia in the AFL Under 18 Championships, was drafted by the Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants with pick 28 in the 2017 national draft. His foundational years included playing at colts level for Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) in 2016, progressing to league level in 2017. He made his official AFL debut in Round 11 of the 2018 season against the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval, marking the beginning of a distinguished career as a formidable key defender. Taylor quickly solidified his reputation, featuring prominently in the 2019 AFL Grand Final with the GWS Giants.

In 2020, his season was severely impacted by septic arthritis in his pelvis and ankle, limiting him to just four games. He experienced another setback in 2021 with an ankle injury, resulting in a six-game absence. A hamstring injury in 2023 further saw him miss seven games. Despite these periods away from the field, he continued to be widely recognized for his elite defensive capabilities and instrumental role in the Giants’ backline, maintaining a high level of impact upon his return.

Demonstrating his long-term commitment and ongoing value to the club, Taylor signed a monumental seven-year contract extension with the GWS Giants in 2024, securing his tenure until at least the end of the 2032 season. His consistent performance through the 2023 and 2024 seasons underscored his continued excellence. Anticipating further recognition, Taylor has also been honored with an All-Australian selection in 2025, solidifying his status as a foundational player and a leading figure in Australian rules football.
