Born Samantha Allison Whitcomb on July 20, 1988, in Ventura, California, Sami Whitcomb began her basketball journey at Buena High School. She was a four-year letter winner and one-year team captain, earning accolades such as the Ventura County Star’s 2005–06 Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year. Her talent led her to the University of Washington, where she was a four-year letter winner. During her senior season in 2009–10, she averaged a career-best 13.0 points per game and was named an All-Pac-10 selection. She finished her college career ranked 15th all-time in UW scoring history with 1,205 points.
After going undrafted in the 2010 WNBA draft, Whitcomb pursued her professional basketball career overseas, playing in Germany and Slovakia. A turning point came in 2013 when she moved to Australia, playing for the Rockingham Flames in the State Basketball League (SBL), where she quickly made a name for herself, earning three consecutive SBL Most Valuable Player awards (2013–2015) and leading the Flames to back-to-back championships in 2014 and 2015. Her success in Australia led to her WNBA debut with the Seattle Storm in 2017 at the age of 28, where she made an immediate impact, tying a WNBA record for most three-pointers in a half. She became a naturalized Australian citizen in 2018, allowing her to represent the Australian Opals internationally, winning a FIBA World Cup silver medal that year and a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Whitcomb’s WNBA career includes two championships with the Seattle Storm in 2018 and 2020. She played crucial roles, contributing to Seattle’s success before moving to the New York Liberty in 2021, where she achieved career highs in points, rebounds, and assists. Her return to the Seattle Storm in 2023 and subsequent signing with the Phoenix Mercury in 2025 further cemented her presence in the league. Domestically in Australia, she continued to excel, winning the WNBL championship and earning WNBL Most Valuable Player with the Bendigo Spirit in 2025, demonstrating her enduring value and leadership on the court.
