Smile Maung, born Than Thar Htoo, is a multifaceted Burmese actress, singer, former model, writer, and businesswoman. Gaining prominence in the early 2000s, Smile began her modeling career in 1998 at the age of 14, quickly becoming a popular figure through magazine covers and TV advertisements. Her modeling success opened doors to the film industry, and by age 16, she debuted in the film “A Chit The Laypyay (Love is the Wind)” alongside Dwe and Eaindra Kyaw Zin.
Smile’s acting career flourished, leading her to star in over 100 films. A notable performance was in the 2002 film “Kyar Mee Swal Ko Ko Myauk Muu Lae Ma Ma,” where she played the main role with Wai Lu Kyaw and Nandar Hlaing. However, in 2003, Smile relocated to England, choosing to step away from her film career to focus on her family life after getting married and having children.
After a decade-long hiatus, Smile returned to the public eye in 2012, this time venturing into the music industry. She launched her debut solo album, “New Me,” on October 15, 2013, marking her successful transition into music. In 2017, she resumed her acting career, starring in four films, including “Gayat Tway Par Hal.” On February 10, 2019, Smile published her biography “Sharing Is Caring,” addressing body shaming and fitness.
Beyond entertainment, Smile and her husband Pyae Maung, a former golfer for the Myanmar National Golf Team, expanded into the telecom industry in 2006 with VMG Telecoms and later launched the VoIP application Ytalk. Their business ventures, under Smile Empire and Smile Online Cinema, now encompass digital content partnerships, mobile payment apps, entertainment, gaming, and hospitality. In August 2022, they purchased a mansion previously owned by American YouTuber Jeffree Star for $16.7 million.
Smile Maung’s illustrious career spans multiple fields, making her a celebrated and influential figure in Myanmar and beyond. She has two daughters, Su Nadi Maung, a model, and Su Yati Maung.
