Sumit Antil’s journey is a testament to resilience and transformation. Born in Khewra, Haryana, he was destined for greatness in sports, dreaming of wrestling and a career in the Indian Army. But life took a sharp turn in 2015 when a tragic accident led to the amputation of his left leg. At just 17, he faced a crossroads that would redefine his future. With the unwavering support of his mother, he discovered para-athletics, igniting a passion that would propel him to international fame.
Training under the guidance of coach Nitin Jaiswal, Antil quickly made his mark in javelin throw. In 2021, he won gold at the Tokyo Paralympics with a record throw of 68.55 meters, a feat he would surpass in 2024 with a throw of 70.59 meters, solidifying his status as a six-time world record holder. His accolades include three gold medals at the World Championships and a world record of 73.29 meters set at the Asian Para Games in 2022.
Antil’s story is not just about medals; it’s about inspiring a nation. He believes that every throw is a step towards greater awareness of para sports in India. “I want to show that we can compete at the highest level,” he says, eyes set on Paris 2024. His journey, marked by determination and grit, continues to inspire countless others, proving that setbacks can lead to extraordinary comebacks.
