Tanner Foust was born on June 13, 1973, in Denver, Colorado. While growing up in a naval family, he spent several years in Scotland, an experience that introduced him to rallying on rural roads. This early exposure fostered a deep passion for automotive performance. After returning to the United States, Foust pursued a pre-med track at the University of Colorado, where he earned a degree in molecular biology. Concurrently, he dedicated his summers to gaining experience in racing, often trading mechanic work and driver coaching for opportunities to get behind the wheel. After college, Foust began his professional career as an ice driving coach and an instructor at automotive marketing events, participating in rally and drifting whenever possible. He transitioned to professional racing in 2003 and subsequently moved to California to pursue a career in stunt driving for Hollywood productions.
Foust’s career highlights include multiple championships and world records. He is a three-time U.S. rallycross champion (2012, 2011, 2010), a two-time Formula Drift champion (2007, 2008), and a recipient of four X Games gold medals (2013, 2010, 2007). His world records include performing the Hot Wheels Double Loop Dare, driving a car through a 66-foot loop-the-loop, setting an indoor speed record for TV’s Top Gear USA, and achieving a 332-foot ramp-to-ramp distance jump in a truck at the Indy 500 in 2011. Foust became the first American driver to win a round of the European Rallycross Championship, finishing both the 2011 and 2012 seasons in the top three overall. He has also represented the USA multiple times in the annual Race of Champions (2010, 2009, 2008). In a significant career turning point, Foust co-hosted the American version of the popular motoring television series, Top Gear, on the History Channel from 2010 to 2016.
His expertise extends to stunt driving for major films such as “The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift” (2006), “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007), “The Bourne Legacy” (2012), “Need For Speed” (2014), “Hitman: Agent 47” (2015), “Straight Outta Compton” (2015), “Ford v Ferrari” (2019) where he also acted as ‘Bucknum’, and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (2023). Foust has continuously competed in prestigious rallycross series, including Global RallyCross, Americas Rallycross, and Nitrocross, securing a Nitrocross championship in 2019 and maintaining the longest running streak of Heat victories in rallycross worldwide. In Extreme E, Foust raced for NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team in 2022 and 2023, achieving podium finishes including a second-place at the 2022 Energy X-Prix.
