Tatanka

Chris Chavis, known professionally as Tatanka, was born on June 8, 1961, in Pembroke, North Carolina. A member of the Lumbee Tribe, Chavis excelled as an athlete in his youth before pursuing competitive bodybuilding and powerlifting. From 1985 to 1990, he worked for Bally’s Health and Tennis Corporation, eventually becoming a divisional manager. In 1987, he had an opportunity to join the Miami Dolphins after open tryouts during an NFL player strike, but he chose to continue his successful career in fitness management. His career path shifted in 1989 when he met “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers, who encouraged him to enter professional wrestling.

Chavis began his wrestling career in 1990, initially wrestling as “War Eagle” Chris Chavis for the North American Wrestling Association, where he was voted third runner-up for PWI Rookie of the Year. He also became the South Atlantic Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Champion that year. In 1991, he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and adopted the ring name Tatanka, meaning “buffalo” in the Lakota language. He made his televised debut in February 1992, beginning an undefeated streak that lasted nearly two years. This period included a notable victory at WrestleMania VIII against Rick Martel and a WWF Intercontinental Championship match against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania IX, which he won by disqualification. His undefeated run concluded in October 1993 after a loss to Ludvig Borga, followed by an attack that sidelined him for three months.

Upon his return in 1994, Tatanka engaged in feuds with Bam Bam Bigelow and Irwin R. Schyster. A significant turning point in his career came at SummerSlam 1994 when he turned villain and joined Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Corporation. He continued to be a prominent figure in the WWF until his departure in 1996, citing family and spiritual reasons. Tatanka remained active on the independent circuit and with international promotions, winning various championships such as the Stampede Wrestling North American Heavyweight Championship and the i-Generation Australasian Championship. He later returned to WWE for sporadic appearances between 2005 and 2007, and again from 2010 onwards, primarily participating in special events and signing a Legends contract in 2015, solidifying his legacy within the company.
